Introduction

Cartooney

New Media Gallery, New Westminster, BC

October 19, 2019 - February 02, 2020

Cartooney is a video exhibition at New Media Gallery featuring six artists who explore structured yet surreal cartoon landscapes—where the logic of animated worlds often supersedes the familiar laws of reality. These worlds operate on their own internal rules, shaped by how cartoon characters perceive their surroundings rather than how we expect things to function. This paradox reflects the instability of modern life, where expectations and reality often clash.

My Role

My role in this project was to develop a cohesive visual design system that seamlessly integrated with the exhibition’s spatial experience, enhancing visitor engagement. I was responsible for designing exhibition graphics, including main wall text, door labels, and the glass façade, while also adapting the visual language across promotional materials. Additionally, I contributed to production work and media collateral to extend the exhibition’s reach. This paradox reflects the instability of modern life, where expectations and reality often clash.

Design Approach

The design approach aimed to evoke a sense of irony, political undertones, and subtle angst—capturing the dark yet playful essence of the exhibition. By emphasizing scale and perspective, I sought to make visitors feel small within the space, reinforcing the immersive and surreal nature of the cartoon-inspired world.
